Today’s Zaman, 26 June, 2014: “EU-Turkey readmission agreement ratified by Parliament”
The readmission agreement between the EU and Turkey was ratified by the Turkish Parliament on Thursday and is expected to contribute to visa liberalization talks.
On Dec. 16, 2013, Turkey and the EU signed an agreement on a visa liberalization dialogue in parallel with a readmission agreement that would result in illegal migrants who enter Europe via Turkey returning to Turkey. Turkey initialed the readmission agreement in 2011, but held off on signing it until the EU started talks on visa liberalization.
Senior EU officials welcomed the ratification of the readmission agreement. EU Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Füle praised the move in a tweet, saying it is one more important step to a visa-free regime for Turks traveling to the EU.
